Mykonos

The Greek island of Mykonos is a popular tourist destination, especially among party seeking Europeans. You will find Mykonos in the Cycles group in the middle of the Aegean Sea in the Mediterranean. The island is located north of Naxos and Paros and south of Tinos and Syros.

This is not the ideal island for vacationers looking for tranquility as you can expect loud night clubs to be open late into the night, and vibrant partying is going on throughout the week on Mykonos during high season. Also, the large number of visitors have made Mykonos to one of the more expensive Greek islands. The price level is similar to that of Santorini. In July and August, Mykonos gets quite crowded so it is strongly recommended to have accommodation booked in advance. In May and June, accommodation is not only easier to find but it is also easier to find inexpensive deals. The same goes for the so called post.-season, which is September through mid-October.

Just like Ibiza and Sitges in Spain, Mykonos is renowned for its gay friendliness. There are plenty of gay bars, making Mykonos one of the hottest gay holiday destinations in summer time Europe. You can expect to meet a lot of gay tourists at the beaches named Elia and Super Paradise, and on the small beach located between Elia and Agrari.

Night clubs

Mykonos nightlife is still heavily focused on bars, but there are a few dance clubs available as well. Three of the more notable ones are Paradise Club Mykonos, Cavo Paradiso and Space.

  • Paradise Club Mykonos is found on a hill to the left of Paradise Beach and is the largest nightclub on the island. It opens early, around 16:30 each day during the peak season, and stays open well into the night. This night club has three stages and a swimming pool, and is known attract famous DJ’s every summer.

  • Cavo Paradiso is also located on a hill to the left of Paradise Beach and is an Ibiza-style open-air mega club open in July and August only. The club opens its doors at 12:30, but the party doesn’t really start until later and it continues to 08:30 in the morning so there is really no rush to be there early. Patrons can enjoy a splendid ocean view or go for a swim in the centrally located swimming pool. Famous DJ’s play here every summer.

  • Space is located at Lakka Square in Mykonos Town, and it is the only large night club that is situated in the town and not on the beach. It specializes in house music and tends to attract a fairly young crowd. The party doesn’t get going until well after midnight and the club stays open until 06:00 in the morning.

Climate

Just like many other Greek islands, Mykonos have hot and dry summers and mild winters. Rains are highly unusual during the summer, while showers are to be expected now and then during the winter season (October-April). Mykonos is a part of the Cyclades islands and is thus exposed to the constant wind called meltemi in July and August, a wind which serves to mitigate the effects of the summer heat.

The tourist season stretches from mid-May to mid-October when the average water temperatures are high enough for most swimmers to enjoy.
